Public Education

Section 5 of Article IX of the State of California Constitution guarantees students a "free public education." The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell (35 Cal.3d.899 (1984)), "that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extra-curricular as well as curricular, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities."  This same ruling found that "mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities such as drama, music and athletic competition were illegal under the State Constitution." Furthermore, they also rejected the argument that "fees could be charged so long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay."

Brown School Adopts

Health and Wellness

Last spring, Brown School embarked on a new path.  We want to improve the health and wellness of everyone at school.  Remember the ABCs of Health and Wellness Education: Attitude, Brain & Body, and Character.  And, one way we’ve started this new path is with our 2 minute bell ringers.  So, if you are on campus at 10 am or 2 pm, be ready to exercise!

Meet our Principal

Mrs. Aviles grew up in nearby Modesto and graduated from college right here in Turlock. Mrs. Aviles has been working with Turlock Unified School District since 2004 and has previously worked at Osborn, Walnut, and Cunningham as a first grade teacher and instructional coach. For the past two years she has been our assistant principal here at Brown School and now as our principal. Mrs. Aviles happily lives here in Turlock with her husband, son and daughter.

Our Assistant Principal

Our Assistant Principal, Dr. Laura Long, studied English, Counseling, Teaching and Educational Leadership at CSU Stanislaus.  Dr. Long has been working as an assistant principal for Turlock Unified School District since 2006.  She and her husband are raising four young children who are actively involved in local youth organizations.  Dr. Long is honored to be able to contribute to the education of children in the lovely Turlock community.
